Cori Jean, a young local Sag Harbor designer, has been hard at work building her new company Cori Jean. She designs and sews everything herself and loves every minute of it. Jean calls it one kind of style with an eclectic, experimental eye that brings together ordinary conventions with selective, glamorous couture. It is a modern mix of '30s elegant socialite, '70s edgy punk and '40s librarian. This chemistry brings together a collection of day-to-night and night-to-day designs that are as versatile, ever changing and unique as every woman herself. Insight for these designs is drawn from a rich array of inspirations, including vintage linens, old movies, local celebrities and the beach, all of which combined create a mix of old Hollywood glamour and urban chic. "Designs come out of a love from redesigning vintage linens with unusual patterns and one of kind pieces that fit into an inspirational love of fashion that just makes one smile," said Jean. Her fashions are currently selling at local stores, such as Flying Point, Smith and Gloria Jewel, as well as on her Web site.

"Some folks just say it so perfectly. Take Cori Jean, for example These designs are the "modern evolution of 1930s elegant socialite with 1970s edgy punk into 1940s librarian." That sounds so intriguing it has me reaching for my MadMen pencil. Saturday, Indoor Artist & Designer Market, 12-8pm." quoted A&F

Elegant, Edgy, And Eclectic
By Taylor K. Vecsey
(03/25/2010) Corinne Morgan came to the South Fork nine years ago, she had no intention of getting into fashion design. Although Southampton College’s graphic design program was an added bonus, it was its Taylor K. Vecsey
A former soccer goalie at Southampton College, Corinne Morgan’s got a brand-new bag.
soccer team that lured her. Making key saves as the goalie in her last year at the college, the team was undefeated up until the fourth game of the N.C.A.A. tournament in 2005.

In her dorm room, though, the goalie was busy mending and sewing clothes for her friends. After college, friends of friends began requesting that she make one-of-a-kind items. “Last Christmas, people started asking me to make stuff for Christmas gifts, like handbags and scarves,” she said. “I made this one man a couple of dresses for a gift. I thought, ‘Hmmm, maybe I can make a go of this.’ ”
With encouragement, she began a line called Cori Jean of eclectic, sometimes experimental, women’s clothing. Her designs are already featured in four clothing stores and have been used in photo shoots for a local magazine. “I never thought I could make a business out of it, but I have,” she said in an interview at her Sag Harbor studio.
She describes her designs, which feature mainly dresses, scarves, and handbags, as “a modern evolution of 1930s elegant socialite with ’70s edgy punk and ’40s librarian.”
Wearing one of her own designs, a long navy jersey dress with a V-neck that bunches in the middle, she pointed out another of her creations, a short, hot-pink tool skirt with floral appliqués, and said this is one of the “most fun” designs in her collection.
In style, her line is sort of Betsy Johnson meets Donna Karen — two designers she admires. “Betsy Johnson is wacky. I love her style. She can just be quirky, and it’s acceptable and fine because it’s her. But, I love Donna Karen’s sensibility.”
A native of Dryden in upstate New York, she draws her inspiration from various places — the beach and the fashionable folks out here, for instance, though more often, she said, it’s the vintage fabric she finds at estate sales and in antique stores that pave the way.
“I search. I go to all different thrift stores, different estate sales. Especially out here, it’s kind of sad, people pass away, and the kids just don’t know what they have, and they’re just giving it to you basically,” she said. She has even pulled a “Scarlet O’Hara,” making dresses and shawls from curtains she has bought.
“I will find things, and I won’t even know what I’m going to use it for, but then two months later, I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh. This can be this dress!’ ”
Having taken only one sewing class in high school, she has taught herself through trial and error. Her mother was a source of help — she had sewn all of Ms. Morgan’s clothes when she was growing up, and so had her grandmother. “It’s innate, I guess.”
While her style is geared toward the 25-to-35-year-old crowd, she is finding that people she never would have dreamed of do appreciate her style. “I’ve had an 80-year-old woman — a vibrant 80 — say, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s a gorgeous dress.’ ”
Her dresses retail at Exhale Spa in Bridgehampton and Flying Point in Southampton for $55 to $225 apiece. Working as a hostess at Bobby Van’s in Bridgehampton (she is also its bookkeeper), she works as her own advertising. “The customers are so supportive. A lot of times they’ll see me wearing stuff, and they’ll want to buy it.”
Lately, she had been focusing on a new line of handbags made out of scarves that are hand sewn and knotted. The handbags are easier to sell because they aren’t fit to size like dresses, she said. They retail for between $35 and $70.

Saturday, June 26 2010 this Shimmer & Shake Dress by Cori Jean was auctioned to help benefit the American Heart Association.
